Communications Associate Job Description
Overview
The Communications Associate helps carry out The Community
Foundation’s mission to promote and expand regional philanthropy and develop
local funds that address changing needs and opportunities in the 18 counties of
Western North Carolina. This position works
with the Director of Communications on public outreach, marketing, branding and
positioning goals of CFWNC. The Communications Associate helps tell the CFWNC
story to key audiences and provides communications support for the activities
of all Foundation departments. He/she produces publications and assists with special
communications for various foundation constituencies including the website and
media relations.
Responsibilities
Publications and Website
- Writes,
edits, produces CFWNC’s quarterly newsletter. Assists with writing,
production of annual report.
- Coordinates
and produces other Foundation publications as needed.
- Helps
manage the Foundation’s website, including making updates and seeking opportunities
for expansion.
- Assists
with management of CFWNC’s graphic standards.
- Maintains
Foundation photo files and press clippings.
Media Relations
- Produces
news releases for local media in the 18-county region. Follows up with
reporters. Works with Director of Communications and the President to
respond to media inquires.
- Develops,
writes, and pitches stories on donors and grantees.
- Assists
with advertising opportunities, production and placement as necessary.
Special Events
- Works
with Communications Director and Foundation staff to plan and execute
special events such as the Friends Luncheon and Power of the Purse
Luncheon.
- Assists
other staff with special events or programs such as donor receptions, and
educational events that promote the work of the Foundation.
- Develops
or adapts PowerPoint presentations and supporting materials for events.
Relationships and
Hours
- Works
with internal and external groups (staff, board, advisory committee
members, donors, printers, graphic designers and the media)
- Reports
to the Director of Communications
- 20
hours/week
Experience and
Knowledge
- At
least five years experience in public relations, communications, marketing
or related experience
- Proven
writing, editing and production skills and experience working with
printers and graphic designers
- Outstanding
organizational skills
- Excellent
oral communication skills
- Experience
working with multiple, overlapping deadlines
- Knowledge
and practice of graphic design
- Proficiency
in InDesign, Word, Dreamweaver and PowerPoint preferred
- Media
relations and news writing experience
- Ability
to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
individuals, nonprofits and media organizations in diverse communities
- Ability
to perform responsibilities in a professional manner and to effectively
represent the Foundation in the communities it serves
- Experience
in website maintenance and design
- Ability
to lift objects of at least 15 pounds in weight. Ability to drive an
automobile for up to three consecutive hours at a time. Job duties require
approximately 85% sitting/typing, and 15% standing/walking.
