Marketing/Public Relations Coordinator (Temporary)

THE NORTH CAROLINA ARBORETUM

Located in the inspirational Southern Appalachian Mountains, The North Carolina Arboretum cultivates connections between people and plants through creative expressions of landscape stewardship, including: Conservation, Education, Garden Demonstration, Economic Development and Research.   The Arboretum promotes the stewardship and enjoyment of the wealth of plant life within the Southern Appalachians through world-renowned gardens demonstrating cultivated and natural landscapes.

 

Description of Work:

 

The position of Public Relations Coordinator serves in the External Affairs Department of the   Arboretum and reports to the Director of External Affairs. The External Affairs Department is composed of the

following:   is composed of the following: 1) Facility Rentals and Events, 2) Marketing & Public Relations 3.) Group Tours   3) Market Research and Visitor Statistics Visitation Statistics, 4) VIP Events and

Activities 5.) Assistance with Legislative Affairs  

 

Media/Public Relations Duties

 

The Marketing/Public Relations Coordinator will oversee local and regional media efforts to publicize Arboretum programs and events and will work with the Director of External Affairs in a number of marketing initiatives for the Arboretum.  Duties include managing an annual production schedule, distributing press releases, writing feature articles and pitching story ideas for Education programs, Exhibits, Special Events, Calendars and Informal Activities, and others as directed. In addition, the Public Relations Coordinator responds to media requests for photos, verification of facts, etc., maintains a media list (excel spreadsheet) and manages Arboretum documentation of media tabulations.   This position serves as a liaison for the Arboretum website assisting and managing content and managing the Arboretum's image files.   This position may also be asked to assist with marketing projects such as development of a marketing plan, budgets and advertising.   The ability to produce simple flyers and

publications is also helpful.

 

Branding

 

This position will work very closely with the Director of External Affairs to implement the Arboretum's new brand effort including assistance in developing approval procedures, writing and editing copy

and serving as part of the approval process for all publications.  

 

Statistics and Visitor Surveys

 

The Public Relations Coordinator works with other staff to maintain current visitor statistics and assist in developing reports that are used for marketing decisions as well as helping to organize ongoing visitor surveys and tabulations.

 

Events

 

The Public Relations Coordinator serves in a support capacity with other staff in External Affairs   for assistance with events, facility rental requests and group tour requests as needed.

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

 

To qualify, applicants must meet minimum education and experience requirements of graduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at least three years of office assistant/secretarial experience; or completion of a two-year  secretarial science or business administration program with one year of experience as described above; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.   A four-year degree in a communications, business or

education field is preferred.   Preference will be given to candidates with considerable knowledge of

Microsoft Office; three to five years' experience within a public setting working in a public relations capacity or in the hospitality industry; media experience, excellent written and oral communication and

public speaking skills; experience in coordinating special events; considerable public relations skills or experience; some knowledge of horticulture or a related natural sciences field.    Successful

candidates will possess good organizational and communications skills.      Some weekend, evening and holiday work will be required.
